The first thing you will have to do when replacing a steering wheel is to find a replacement. Just like cars, not all steering wheels are the same. They come in all shapes and sizes, and the main bolt needs to be able to fit securely to the steering column to function properly. So when you find the perfect steering wheel, check if it can actually fit your car before you buy it.

Covers

Steering wheel covers

Before you can remove the steering wheel itself, the covers on and around the steering wheel need to be removed. When removing the covers, do keep track of all the screws and where they fit. You will need them again later to put these covers back. The removal of these covers also expose a vital component of modern steering wheels: wires.

Wires

To be able to control various car functions from the steering wheel, many wires need to connect the steering wheel to the rest of the car. These wires will need to be carefully detached from the steering wheel before it can be removed. Do remember to unplug the battery before detaching the wires as live wires can be dangerous. If you happen to damage the wires, call a mechanic immediately.

The Lug Nut

The lug nut is how the steering wheel is fastened to the steering column and is the final piece to remove before you can switch out the steering wheels. You might need specialised tools to remove the lug nut, so do come prepared. Do be careful when removing the steering wheel as you could trigger the airbag within.

Lubrication

Before you put on your new steering wheel, you might need to lubricate the gears to keep it running smoothly. You may need to clean out the old grease and reapply to ensure your steering wheel can turn effortlessly. Then just put in the new steering and put everything back together!

Although this may seem like a straightforward process, it is not without risks so it is better that you leave it to the professionals.
