The best selling MPVs in Malaysia
It is a bit hard to get a clear picture of the MPV market in Malaysia. As some of the MPVs on the roads are grey imports, we will never get an accurate sales data of MPVs in the Malaysian market. Despite that, it is easy to tell which of the models are among the popular MPVs as they flood our Malaysian roads like no others. Here’s a list of some of the best selling MPVs in Malaysia and what makes them so popular.
Toyota Alphard/Vellfire
We must include the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire when talking about the best selling MPVs in Malaysia. UMW Malaysia does bring in Alphards and Vellfires officially, but most of them on the roads are recon units as it is cheaper to buy from grey importers. It is almost a status symbol driving or owning a Toyota Alphard or Vellfire. The refinement of the interior and a pair of captain seats make you feel like you are travelling on a plane in business class.
Yes it is on the expensive side, costing about RM370k, but why is it so popular you may ask. Some of the buyers treat it as an alternative to a mid size executive sedan especially those with a chauffeur. It also offers so much more space and usability, it can be a business vehicle on the weekdays and family car on the weekends. If you think of it, the Alphard and Vellfire are almost a bargain (even more so when you buy these cars from us). That is why our roads are full of these ‘towkay’ mobiles.
Perodua Alza
The Perodua Alza is the first MPV from Perodua. With the price tag of around RM50-60k it is the most affordable MPV on the market. Based on the Daihatsu Boon Luminas the Alza is powered by a 1.5 liter DVVT engine. It was the best selling MPVs in Malaysia back in 2010, it is starting to show its age despite the model’s two updates. We’re hoping to see a brand new Perodua Alza in the near future being a co-developed model with Toyota Avanza and Daihatsu Xenia.
Proton Exora
The Proton Exora is the first homegrown MPV from Malaysia, it is also affordable at around RM70k when it was first launched. It offers the best cabin and occupant spaces in its price bracket. The practicality and affordability of the Exora even lead to them being adopted as taxis in many cities around Malaysia. Just like the Alza, the Exora only been though a few mild updates since 2009. Making it almost an outdated vehicle in 2021. With the news of Proton working on a 7-seater SUV from Geely, are we going to see a full-fledged MPV from Proton?
Toyota Estima
There are plenty of Estimas driving on our Malaysian roads, if you get to know more about it you will understand why. Just like the Alphards/Vellfire, most of the Estimas on the road are reconditioned units. Although the Estima has smaller dimensions but the cabin is spacious enough for 7 fully grown adults. The Estima drives and handles way better than its bigger brother, which is a plus point for most of us that don’t have a driver. It comes with an array of premium amenities, but most importantly it rides just as comfortably. It is slightly more affordable than the Alphard without losing much in terms of comfortability, which is the reason why its so popular. It will set you back about RM270k though.
Nissan Serena
The Nissan Serena is one of the few MPVs in the bunch that comes with a hybrid powertrain at RM150k. Nissan claims it can achieve a fuel consumption rating of 14.2 kilometers per liter. Pretty impressive for a 7 seater MPV. The Serena is known for its split opening tailgate, which eases loading and unloading when the rear of the car is parked close to a wall. The first and second row seats feature Zero Gravity technology for improved comfort, together with features such as power sliding doors, Intelligent Moving Object Detection (i-MOD), Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it has no competitors in the sub-RM150k market.
These are some of the best selling MPVs in Malaysia and what else you think should be on the list? The MPVs are slowing becoming a dying breed in the car market with more buyers choosing 7 seater or 3 row seating SUVs over MPVs nowadays. But in terms of usability and comfort of a family car, nothing will ever come close to a MPV.
