What is Proton X50 all about?
Proton has been making waves lately for being crowned as the best-selling SUV brand in Malaysia. By selling 45,149 SUVs in 2021, the number accounted for nearly 40% of total sales volume. The best-selling SUV overall was the Proton X50 with 28,774 units sold. Moreover, Proton even posted its best-ever month in December with 4,310 units. In this read, we will talk about all things Proton X50.
Attractive inside and out
Firstly, the X50 is much smaller than the Proton X70. Measuring 4,330 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and 1,609 mm tall, it is 189 mm shorter, 31 mm narrower and 85 mm lower compared to its sibling, while its 2,600 mm wheelbase is 70 mm shorter. If you notice, the X50 has the prominent front fender bulges, deep shoulder line creases and blacked-out D-pillars that give the car a floating roof look. Overall, the X50 has a far sportier design, reduced dimensions and the fitment of the Sport exterior package as standard.
Inside, the X50 poses with a dual-tone look with various satin chrome accents all-around. It highlights a futuristic minimalist dashboard design, a floating touchscreen infotainment display, and a jet fighter-inspired air vents.
In terms of connectivity, the GKUI 19 (Geely Smart Ecosystem user interface) infotainment system comes with the ‘Hi Proton’ voice assistant functionality programmed to pick up the Malaysian accent. This enables control over several functions such as windows operation, online navigation, air-conditioning, and online music streaming. The system also has a mirror-link ability that connects iOS or Android devices to the IHU. With the help of the Proton Link app, you can remotely control car functions like air conditioning and engine start.
Did you know? Power comes from a 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine developed by Geely and Volvo. Two versions are available, with the Standard, Executive and Premium making 150 PS at 5,500 rpm and 226 Nm from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm.
5-star safety rating
The ASEAN NCAP safety programme has already gauged the safety performance of the SUV and awarded it a perfect 5-star rating. Depending on the variant, the SUV’s safety kit comprises six airbags, ABS with EBD and BA, hill start assist, hill descent control, an electronic parking brake, and a reverse camera.
