Under this system, everyone starts off with zero demerit points, and should you commit a traffic violation worthy of demerit points, they\u2019ll begin to add up. <\/span>\n\nIf you accumulate 24 or more demerit points within 24 months, you\u2019ll be suspended for a period of 12 months. Furthermore, if you accumulate more than 24 points, you instantly face license suspension. <\/span>\n\nThere is no getting out of demerit points. Once you\u2019ve got them, you\u2019ve got them until they reset. The only way for them to reset is by waiting. Demerit points will be erased if you\u2019re free from any traffic violations for 12 months since your last offence. <\/span>\n\nSo the best way to avoid demerit points is to understand why exactly you\u2019d get demerit points. Here is a list of the most common violations, violations that you may not know are violations, and the major violations that you absolutely want to avoid. <\/span>\n

\u2192 Exceeding the speed limit <\/span><\/h3>\nFine: 4-24 demerit points, depending on how much you exceed the speed limit by\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The first offence includes a fine not exceeding $1,000 or imprisonment of up to six months, and in some cases, even both. However, it is not illegal to use a device that is mounted on a holder or dashboard. But do keep in mind that anything that may distract you while driving can lead to injuries, so usage of a mounted phone, while legal, should be limited. <\/span>\n

\u2192 Failure of the driver to wear a seatbelt or of the driver to ensure that <\/span>every single <\/span><\/i>passenger <\/span>is wearing a seatbelt <\/span><\/h3>\nEven though this may be caused by a passenger, the fine and demerit points will be issued to the driver, so make sure to buckle up, everyone.\n\nFine: 3 demerit points, and a $150-$200 composite fine. <\/span>\n

\u2192 Reckless or dangerous driving<\/span><\/h3>\nFine: 26 demerit points and prosecution in court. <\/span>\n

\u2192 Driving under the influence<\/span><\/h3>\nFine: Instead of demerit points, as a first time offender, you will be immediately disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver\u2019s license for at least two years, and liable to a fine of between $2,000 and $10,000 and\/or up to 1 year\u2019s jail time. If you\u2019re a repeat offender, you will be barred from holding or obtaining a license for at least 5 years, and be faced fines between $5000 and $20,000 and up to 2 year\u2019s jail time. <\/span>\n\nAll in all, demerit points are easily avoided if you\u2019re being a safe and careful driver.
