You better buckle up, because it\u2019s about to be a ride. From rickshaws and cars to COEs and ERPs, we\u2019ll take you through the history of cars in Singapore.<\/span>\r\n<h2><b><i>1896: The first \u2018horseless carriage\u2019<\/i><\/b><\/h2>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_14812\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14812\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14812 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/carro.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/22392.jpg\" alt=\"Motor-Velocipede in history of cars in Singapore\" width=\"1024\" height=\"776\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14812\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/group-media.mercedes-benz.com\/marsMediaSite\/en\/instance\/ko\/Debut-of-the-Benz-Motor-Velocipede-125-years-ago-in-April-1894-The-worlds-first-mass-production-automobile.xhtml?oid=43227263\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mercedes-Benz Benz<\/a> | The Benz Comfortable with 2 kW (2.75 hp) power, production time from 1898.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rickshaws and horse-drawn carriages were common forms of transportation throughout Singapore in the 19th Century. But things started to change in August 1896, when the Katz Brothers brought <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eresources.nlb.gov.sg\/newspapers\/Digitised\/Article\/singfreepressb18960813-1.2.6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the first automobiles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which literally means \u2018self-moving\u2019) to Singapore, advertising them as \u2018horseless carriages\u2019. The Benz and Cie's 'Motor-Velociped' at that time was sold for S$1,600 which in today\u2019s money, is equivalent to more than $56,000. Unsurprisingly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eresources.nlb.gov.sg\/newspapers\/Digitised\/Article\/straitstimes19580705-1.2.94.1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no one really knew how to use it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\r\n\r\nRead more: <a href=\"https:\/\/carro.sg\/blog\/car-history-worlds-firsts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Car history: Part 1<\/a>\r\n<h2><b>1907: Say hello to Singapore\u2019s first female motorist\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/eresources.nlb.gov.sg\/newspapers\/Digitised\/Article\/singfreepressb19351008-1.2.4.16\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mrs G. M. Dare drove Singapore\u2019s first registered car<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the license plate S-1, and locals had called her car the \u2018devil wind carriage\u2019. She was a prolific driver who drove all over Singapore, Malaysia, Java, Scotland and England. The same year, the Straits Times dedicated a special column to cars, which indicates an interest in automobiles in the general population despite many having not owned or driven a car yet.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<h2><b>1909: Ford enters Singapore\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_14813\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14813\" style=\"width: 668px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14813 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/carro.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screenshot-2022-08-09-at-12.22.17-PM.png\" alt=\"Ford advert in history of cars in Singapore\" width=\"668\" height=\"325\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14813\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/eresources.nlb.gov.sg\/newspapers\/Digitised\/Article\/straitstimes19091224-1.2.89.1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Straits Times<\/a> 1909<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ford\u2019s iconic Model T had burst onto the scene in the US in 1908 and only a year later, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eresources.nlb.gov.sg\/newspapers\/Digitised\/Article\/singfreepressb19261123-1.2.32\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arrived in Singapore as well<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Its influence only increased when the Ford Motor Company of Malaya was set up in 1926 to supervise production and distribution throughout Southeast Asia and by then had dominated 80% of car sales in Malaya. The Model T remains an icon and symbol of industrialisation in the US, and was also named Car of the Century in 1999.<\/span>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2><b>1910: Uncle, taxi please!<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taxis are not a modern concept \u2013 in fact, rickshaw pullers were arguably the de facto pioneers of the foot taxi scene. However, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/biblioasia.nlb.gov.sg\/vol-14\/issue-3\/oct-dec-2018\/wheels-of-change\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first flagdown for a car took place in 1910<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and made Singapore the second city in Asia, after Calcutta, India, to have such a modern service. C.F.F. Wearne and Company fitted 2 Rovers with meters and put them to use as private hire cabs. But by the end of the 1920s, taxis were stationed at post offices, Raffles Place and several hotels, ready to pick up passengers.<\/span>\r\n<h2><b>1920s: The \u2018mosquito bus\u2019 gains popularity\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_14817\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14817\" style=\"width: 611px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14817\" src=\"https:\/\/carro.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Mosquito_bus_1935.jpg\" alt=\"Mosquito bus brief history of cars in Singapore\" width=\"611\" height=\"458\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14817\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of National Archives of Singapore<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The roomy 7 seater had been retrofitted and transformed into a 7-seater omnibus that weaved in and out of traffic. At this point \u2018public transport\u2019 wasn\u2019t exactly a novel concept to residents in Singapore, but this popular \u2018bus\u2019 was definitely a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/eresources.nlb.gov.sg\/newspapers\/Digitised\/Article\/singfreepressb19330301.2.51\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">key player in the history of cars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Singapore.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2><b>1926: Singapore says \u2018no\u2019 to General Motors in Tanjong Katong<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General Motors tried to make its foray into the scene in Singapore after seeing the popularity of Ford. They had requested for a factory site in Katong, but the British government at that time <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eresources.nlb.gov.sg\/newspapers\/Digitised\/Article\/straitstimes19291121-1.2.59\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rejected the request<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, saying that it would \u2018spoil the amenities\u2019 in the area. General Motors then moved their factory to the Dutch East Indies instead. Interestingly, Ford would apply to use the same area 3 years later in 1929, only to also be rejected for the same reasons. Looks like the history of cars in Singapore sometimes repeats itself.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2><b>1948: Britain bans all American cars in Singapore\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After WWII, General Motors tried to enter Singapore again. In 1947, their plans were greenlit and they began operations by early 1948, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eresources.nlb.gov.sg\/newspapers\/Digitised\/Article\/straitstimes19470727-1.2.27\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employing almost 1,000 people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The plan was to assemble cars and export them to areas <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">throughout the Dutch East Indies, British Malaya, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indochina<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Siam and even parts of Southern CHina. However plans came to a sudden halt <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by June, as the British government made plans to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eresources.nlb.gov.sg\/newspapers\/Digitised\/Article\/freepress19480614-1.2.19\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ban all American and Canadian vehicles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<h2><b>1953: No more shady taxi business\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meters were made compulsory for all licensed taxis, though many people still continued to haggle and negotiate for what they thought was a fair price. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/remembersingapore.org\/2014\/10\/02\/the-evolution-of-singapore-taxis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electronic meter was only a requirement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> much later in 1984. Now, nearly every taxi accepts PayWave.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<h2>1960s: <b>Rise of Japanese cars<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the 1950s onwards, Japanese cars were available in Singapore, and boy did it catch on. By 1970, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eresources.nlb.gov.sg\/newspapers\/Digitised\/Article\/straitstimes19711011-1.2.4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% of cars sold in Singapore were Japanese cars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Its functionality, durability and of course, price, were key selling points for brands like Datsun and Nissan, which were particularly popular at that time. <\/span>\r\n<h2><b>1974: Singapore Area Licensing Scheme\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_14823\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14823\" style=\"width: 735px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14823\" src=\"https:\/\/carro.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/324a0b58ec828a29e0d974617c19f03b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"735\" height=\"497\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14823\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Restricted Zone sign at Bencoolen Street in 1975. Source: Straits Times<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we had the Electronic Road Pricing gantries (more on that later), Singapore controlled road usage with this scheme. Cars and motorcycles had to attach a special paper license which gave them permission to enter the areas. How were checks carried out, you ask? Through good ol\u2019 eye power, literally! Auxiliary police officers physically monitored the areas to spot any errant vehicle owners and would book them for any violations.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2><b>1975: Toyota bursts into the scene in Singapore\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_14826\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14826\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14826\" src=\"https:\/\/carro.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Corolla-01.jpg\" alt=\"Toyota Corolla in history of cars in Singapore\" width=\"1280\" height=\"660\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/mag.toyota.co.uk\/toyota-corolla-foundations-of-a-world-beater\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toyota Corolla<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Known as \u2018Toyoda\u2019 back then, the Japanese company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toyotsu.com.sg\/about-us\/history\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set up a branch in Singapore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and rose to be a household brand in Singapore today. It is interesting to note that the attractive features of Toyota cars today mimic that of the old advertisements for Datsun and Nissan. Toyota still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/transport\/toyota-retains-top-sales-spot-in-2021-with-runner-up-bmw-narrowing-gap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remains Singapore's number 1 car brand<\/a> (as of 2021), and the Corolla is still their top model across the globe.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2><b>1982: The Toyota Crown dominates the road\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_14816\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14816\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14816\" src=\"https:\/\/carro.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/article64-Do-you-remember-how-taxis-used-to-look-like.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"804\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14816\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdgtaxi.com.sg\/do-you-remember-how-taxis-used-to-look-like\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CDG Taxi<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Toyota Crown was introduced in 1982 and was the most popular form of taxi in the 1990s and the early 2000s but was unfortunately scrapped in September of 2014. At one point, 8 out of 10 taxis on the road were a Crown. Taxi models have since seen many iterations, but none seem to be able to replace the Toyota Crown as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Taxi <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the eyes of history. But if you\u2019re yearning for that nostalgic-inducing, stomach-hurling, frenetic clutch-changing experience, then take a chance with the taxis in Hong Kong, which are still using the Toyota Crown.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<h2><b>1998: Beep! The ERP goes live<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11696\" src=\"https:\/\/carro.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ERP.png\" alt=\"ERP Charges go up 2021\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carro.co\/sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ERP.png 1200w, https:\/\/carro.co\/sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ERP-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/carro.co\/sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ERP-1024x536.png 1024w, https:\/\/carro.co\/sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ERP-768x402.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another milestone in the history of cars in SIngapore is the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP). In August 1998, the East Coast Highway finally welcomed the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantry. The scheme finally went live after the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eresources.nlb.gov.sg\/infopedia\/articles\/SIP_832__2009-01-05.html#:~:text=ERP%20was%20activated%20on%201,Road%20upramp%20to%20the%20ECP.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">government greenlit the project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nearly a decade ago in 1989. To date, there are 93 ERP gantries in Singapore, with tolls going as high as S$4 on the CTE during peak hour.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nRead more: <a href=\"https:\/\/carro.sg\/blog\/erp-satellite-system-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New satellite-based ERP system by 2023<\/a>\r\n<h2><b>1990: COE changes car scene<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to the history of cars in Singapore, one can\u2019t forget the COE. Between 1975 and 1990, the growth rate for cars was about 12% per annum. To control numbers on the road, the government introduced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eresources.nlb.gov.sg\/infopedia\/articles\/SIP_1005_2006-04-07.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certificate of Entitlement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on 1 May 1990, which instated the bidding system. It was initially a closed bidding system, with bids being secret. Those who successfully clinched the bid paid the price of the lowest bid for the quota category. Between 1926 to1965, Ford Malaya was the only automobile factory in Singapore. During the war, the factory in Bukit Timah was used for the signing of the surrender and was used to assemble trucks for the Japanese. During its time till 1980 before it shuttered for good, the factory employed 300 employees (from a humble 15!), and saw some 150,000 vehicles roll off its production line.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<h2>2016: Most expensive vehicle plate number auctioned for S$335,000<\/h2>\r\nPeople in Singapore take their 'huat' very seriously. And someone thought the <a href=\"https:\/\/tnp.straitstimes.com\/news\/singapore\/vintage-vehicle-plate-number-auctioned-335000\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">'S32H' vintage vehicle registration number was worth that much<\/a>. It is estimated that there are only 20 of such single-S registration plates left in Singapore.\r\n<h2><b>2017: Singapore debuts very own supercar<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_14814\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14814\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14814 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/carro.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/VINCARVandaDendrobium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14814\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Vincar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singapore has never had its own domestic car brand but they might just be making a blip in the history of cars in Singapore. In 2017 at the Geneva Motor Show, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/lifestyle\/motoring\/singapores-first-supercar-unveiled-at-geneva-motor-show\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unveiled The Dendrobium<\/a>. Named after an orchid species, this car is a joint collaboration by local company Vanda Electrics and Williams Advanced Engineering (you\u2019ll know them from F1), this electric supercar is a two-seater with four motors powered by Formula E lithium batteries. If you think it sounds powerful, you\u2019re not wrong.
