{"id":1625,"date":"2016-04-29T05:01:57","date_gmt":"2016-04-29T05:01:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.carro.sg\/?p=1625"},"modified":"2025-11-05T17:32:46","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T09:32:46","slug":"boohoo-car-fines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carro.co\/sg\/blog\/boohoo-car-fines\/","title":{"rendered":"More Car Fines, Again"},"content":{"rendered":"29 April 2016\r\n\r\nSINGAPORE - The National Environment Agency (NEA) will increase the penalty for repeat offenders who leave their vehicle engines idling from June 1, as part of ongoing efforts to further improve Singapore's ambient air quality and safeguard public health.\r\n\r\nThe move serves as a stronger deterrent against idling vehicle engines, NEA said in a statement on Friday (April 29).\r\n\r\nIt added that the higher penalty for repeat offenders is being imposed following an upward trend of such offences.\r\n<div class=\"ads clearleft\"><\/div>\r\nBetween 2013 and 2015, the number of enforcement cases grew from about 3,200 in 2013, to 3,800 in 2014, and 5,100 in 2015.\r\n\r\nDuring the first three months of 2016, NEA took action against 1,489 errant motorists for idling engine offences.\r\n<div id=\"innity-in-post\"><\/div>\r\n<div><\/div>\r\n<figure class=\"image file-media-original media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/sites\/default\/files\/nea_0.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"661\" height=\"788\"><figcaption>An NEA infographic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\nUnder the Environmental Protection and Management (Vehicular Emissions) Regulations, it is an offence to leave the engine of a motor vehicle running when it is stationary for reasons other than traffic conditions.\r\n\r\nStarting from June 1, motorists caught leaving their vehicle engines idling for a second or subsequent time may compound the offence by paying a composition sum of $100, up from the current $70.\r\n\r\nIf the composition sum is not paid, the errant motorist is liable to a maximum court fine of $5,000 upon conviction.\r\n\r\nThe regulations apply to all motorists driving all types of motor vehicles, except:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>vehicles that require their engines to be switched on for operation of on-board machinery, such as chiller trucks, concrete mixers;<\/li>\r\n \t<li>taxis\/buses in a queue at their designated stops, stands or terminals waiting to pick up\/drop off passengers;<\/li>\r\n \t<li>vehicles that are used for law enforcement or emergency purposes, such as ambulances, SCDF or police vehicles;<\/li>\r\n \t<li>vehicles undergoing inspection or maintenance.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nNEA said signs have been installed at hotspots to remind motorists about the new regulations and car fines.
