{"id":3703,"date":"2016-09-28T05:38:52","date_gmt":"2016-09-28T05:38:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.carro.sg\/?p=3703"},"modified":"2025-11-05T17:23:58","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T09:23:58","slug":"car-terminology-guide-part-two","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carro.co\/sg\/blog\/car-terminology-guide-part-two\/","title":{"rendered":"Ultimate Car Expert Terminology Cheatsheet (Part 2)"},"content":{"rendered":"We bring you through this two-part special of the technicals of every car terminology you should add to your vocabulary from A to Z.\r\n<h2><strong>\u00a0 \u00a0O<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li><b>OMV<\/b>: T<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he Open Market Value is how much a car distributor paid the factory for a buyer\u2019s new car, plus the cost of shipping it over, and the cost of insuring it against a transit mishap.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Overhang<\/strong>: The distance from\u00a0the front wheel to the rear wheel.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Oversteer<\/strong>: A fault in the set up of the steering system when a car steers round a corner more sharply than the driver had intended.\r\n<h2><strong>P<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li><b>PARF<\/b>:\u00a0D<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e-registering and scrapping or re-exporting a\u00a0car when it reaches the end of its COE decade (or anytime before) can get some of the upfront taxes the driver paid back, as a Preferential Additional Registration\u00a0Fee rebate.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Pillar<\/strong>: Pillars will connect the roof of the body to the vehicle.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Pinion<\/strong>: A type of gear that has small teeth that mesh with other, large gears.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Powertrain<\/strong>: A group of components used to power the wheels that are calibrated into either front or rear-wheel drive.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><b>PQP<\/b>:\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For individuals who wish to keep their cars beyond the stipulated 10 year mark, the Prevailing Quota Premium is equivalent to the three month COE price average.<\/span>\r\n<h2><strong>R<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Rear wheel drive<\/strong>: The power of the engine is transmitted to the rear wheels only. The front wheels are primarily used for steering.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Revs<\/strong>:\u00a0An engine revolution occurs every time the pistons in the car travel up and down the cylinders.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>RPM<\/strong>: Revs per minute. The higher the number of revs per minute, the higher the power.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Rubbing strip<\/strong>: Protective strips that are moulded to fit around the door.\r\n<h2><strong>S<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Scoop<\/strong>: These verves protrude from the vehicle to allow cooling to take place.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Sill<\/strong>: Any extensions to the body of the vehicle.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Spark Ignition (SI) engines<\/strong>: Use petrol as the fuel to drive the car.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Spark plugs<\/strong>: Used in petrol engines to ignite the petrol and air mixture to drive\u00a0the car.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Spoiler<\/strong>: An attachment that alters the forces that work on the car, creating less lift and\/or cooling the car.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Stroke<\/strong>: The difference between the extremes of the piston's movements as the engine revs.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Supercharger<\/strong>: An air compressor used to increase power by forcing more air into an engine than it can inhale on its own.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Suspension systems<\/strong>: Absorbs shock from the road. It also helps the car to travel around corners safely.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Swage line<\/strong>: The body of the vehicle curves in a signature way for the appearance or functionality of the vehicle.\r\n<h2><strong>T<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Torque<\/strong>: A measurement of the force with which the engine turns its wheels of the car. The greater the torque, the faster the vehicle.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Track<\/strong>: This is the distance measured side-to-side between the base of the vehicles.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Transmission<\/strong>: A gearbox with a number of selectable ratios. This is used to match the engine's rpm and torque to differing wheel requirements.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Turbo<\/strong>: A device which uses the exhaust gases to drive a turbine which forces more air into the combustion chamber.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Turn-in<\/strong>: The moment of transition between driving straight ahead and cornering.\r\n<h2><strong>U<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Understeer<\/strong>: A fault in the steering which causes the\u00a0car to turn around a corner less sharply than the driver had intended.\r\n<h2><strong>V<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>V-type engines<\/strong>: The cylinders are divided into two angled banks, forming a 'V'.\r\n<h2><strong>W<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Wheelbase<\/strong>: The distance between the center of the front wheels to the center of the rear wheels<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Wheel well<\/strong>: The wheel sits in the wheel well\u00a0under the body of the vehicle.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nNow that you're completely fluent in car-talk, impress car dealers the next time you're looking for a good deal!
