While this may seem like a lenient legislation, this law is in effect as long as you do not cause an accident to happen. The repercussions for causing an accident while using your handphone will likely be much more severe.\r\n<h2>What is the penalty for 'handphone driving'?<\/h2>\r\nIf convicted of handphone driving for the first time, the driver is liable to a fine of up to $1,000\/-, or jailed up to 6 month, or both. The offender may also\u00a0have his license revoked. In the event that the license is not revoked, he will be given 12 demerit points instead.\r\n\r\nIf convicted of handphone driving multiple times, a second-time or subsequent offender shall be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000\/-, or jailed for a term not exceeding 12 months, or both. The offence may also be compounded with a composition amount of up to $230\/-. The offender will also be given 12 demerit points.\r\n\r\nThe offender's handphone and SIM card may be seized to facilitate investigations.
