Understanding your options to sell a car in Malaysia

There are a few common ways Malaysians sell their cars – from handling it yourself to letting professionals take over. Each option comes with trade-offs in terms of price, time, and peace of mind. Here’s a breakdown to help you choose what works best for you.

Private sale/Direct to buyer

Selling your car privately is one of the most common routes Malaysians take. Whether through online classifieds or social platforms like Mudah and Facebook Marketplace, direct selling gives you full control and a chance to earn more since you skip the middleman. But it also comes with its own set of challenges that many sellers don’t anticipate until they’re knee-deep in messages, negotiations, and meetups.

Here’s what you can expect if you decide to sell your car directly to a buyer:

Pros

  • Full control, with the potential to get the best value since you’re not dealing with a dealer’s margin.
  • Selling online gives you access to a big audience, as platforms like Mudah and Facebook Marketplace can connect you with thousands of potential buyers.
  • You set the price yourself, so you can wait for offers that match your car’s condition and market demand.

Cons

  • Time-consuming. Takes up a lot of your time as you handle everything yourself – screening buyers, arranging viewings, haggling, etc.
  • Your inbox will explode with lowball offers and inquiries.
  • Safety concerns when meeting strangers and conducting test drives. Scammers love these platforms.
  • Paperwork, inspections, and loan settlements fall entirely on you.

Selling privately might seem like the best way to maximise your return, but it often turns into more work and hassle than most people expect. From scams to endless negotiations, it’s not always worth the time and effort.

Traditional used car dealers

Selling to a used car dealer is one of the fastest ways to let go of your car. You can walk in, get a valuation, and sometimes close the deal on the same day – no need to meet buyers or deal with paperwork. But this convenience often comes with trade-offs, especially when dealing with traditional, walk-in, brick-and-mortar used car dealers.

Pros

  • Fast and convenient – just drive in, get an offer, and sell on the spot.
  • No need to handle paperwork or deal with buyers yourself.

Cons

  • You may get a lowball offer and be undercut.
  • Some dealers use pressure tactics and may even delay payment.
  • No transparency on how the value is determined.
  • Not all are licensed or reputable – check reviews online before visiting one!

Traditional dealers offer speed and convenience, but the trade-off is usually a lower price and less transparency. If getting the best value matters to you, it’s worth exploring modern alternatives that combine convenience with fairness.

The inspection is transparent – you can review the findings before choosing the next step.

Step 3 – Receive an offer from Carro

If there happens to be multiple bids, you can accept the best one.

Step 4 – Accept the offer and get paid

FAQs on selling a car in Malaysia

General FAQs

  1. What documents do I need to sell my car?
    You will need:
    • Original Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC/geran)
    • Owner’s NRIC/passport
    • Proof of insurance (if road tax needs renewal)
    • Loan settlement letter (if under hire purchase)
    • Spare keys and service records (optional, but improves value)
  2. Do I need to clear my summonses before selling?
Yes. All outstanding JPJ, PDRM, and AES summonses must be cleared before ownership transfer.
  3. Is a Puspakom inspection required?
Yes. A B5 inspection is mandatory for ownership transfer. It verifies chassis number, engine number, and roadworthiness.
  4. Can I sell my car if I still have a bank loan?
Yes. The loan must be settled first. If selling to a dealer or platform, they can help pay off the outstanding loan. If the car’s value is higher than the loan balance, you’ll get the difference. If it’s lower, you must cover the shortfall.
  5. Can I sell my car if my road tax has expired?
    • Less than 1 year → Renew road tax before selling.
    • 1–3 years → Either renew as normal or do a Puspakom B5 inspection with thumbprint verification.
    • More than 3 years → Must complete a B5 inspection and thumbprint verification before selling.
(These rules are based on JPJ requirements and subject to change.)
  6. Do I need valid insurance to sell my car?
If road tax renewal is required, yes. You must have valid insurance before road tax can be renewed.
  7. What if my car has been modified?
Major modifications must be declared and approved by JPJ. Non-approved mods may cause the car to fail the Puspakom inspection.
  8. How is the car’s value determined?
By age, mileage, accident history, service records, and current market demand. Insurance market values, JPJ auction results and market transactions are often used as benchmarks.
  9. Can I retain my car plate when I sell my car?
Yes. You’ll need to buy a replacement number plate for the car and go through the interchange process with Puspakom and JPJ.
