Perodua Myvi
The prototypical Perodua car, the Perodua Myvi has been on our nation’s roads since 2005. Affectionately known as the King of the Road, it is known for sipping fuel in at 4.5 L/100km or 22 km/L. On top of that, it can navigate tight turns and corners with its small 5.1-metre turning radius. On top of that, the Perodua Myvi is affordable, making it a popular first car for students and white-collar workers.
This popularity allowed the Perodua Myvi to dominate the sales charts year after year. It was even the best-selling car for 12 years in a row from 2006 to 2017! This popularity was not limited to Malaysia. Foreign countries like Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Brunei, Singapore, the UK, Fiji and the Seychelles all imported the beloved Myvi. This made the Myvi the first Malaysian car to sell over 1 million units in 2017.

The Carro Certified new guard
Proton X50
2017 marked a turning point for Proton, as China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group acquired a 49.9% stock in Proton’s parent company, DRB-HICOM, and Proton’s 51% stake in Lotus. A mere 3 years later in October 2020, Proton hit the market with the Proton X50. Priced at RM79,200, the X50 is stylish, has decent fuel efficiency at 6.4 L/100km or 15 km/L and a large, comfortable interior.
It was an immediate success. The X50 provided Malaysian buyers with an affordable and powerful SUV just as the market began favouring the body type. The X50 became the nation’s best-selling SUV in short order and was exported to 11 countries. This resurgence marked the return of Proton as a serious competitor to Perodua.

Perodua Bezza
Prior to 2016, Perodua only manufactured hatchbacks, SUVs, and MPVs, but not sedans. That changed when they introduced the Perodua Bezza to the country. Designed and built in Malaysia from the ground up, the car is affordable, selling at RM37,000. This affordability, combined with its large 508-litre boot and fuel-efficient engine made the Bezza an instant hit, selling 36,000 units within the second half of 2016.
E-hailing would only buoy the Perodua Bezza’s success, as the car’s affordability, fuel efficiency and large boot made it predisposed to become an e-hailing vehicle. The Bezza would then dethrone the Perodua Myvi as the nation’s best-selling car in 2023.
