LTA car inspection guide: When, where, and how often you need to go

Keeping your car in good condition is part of being a responsible driver in Singapore. One of the key requirements set by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is the periodic car inspection. It helps ensure that every vehicle on the road is safe, well maintained, and within emission standards.

If you are unsure about when to go, where to do it, or how often these inspections are required, this guide will explain everything.

What is an LTA car inspection?

An LTA car inspection is a mandatory check that ensures your car is roadworthy. During the inspection, trained technicians will examine different parts of your vehicle, including the brakes, lights, suspension, tyres, emissions, and overall structural condition.

The goal is to make sure your car meets all safety and environmental standards. If your car fails, you will need to repair the issues and return for a re-inspection.

How often you need to inspect your car?

The inspection frequency depends on the age and type of your vehicle. For most passenger cars in Singapore, the inspection schedule is straightforward.

1. Private cars

  • No inspection needed for the first three years
  • Once every two years from year three to year ten
  • Once a year after the car turns ten years old

This means that if you own a newer car, you will only start going for inspections in its third year. As the car ages, the schedule becomes more frequent to make sure it remains safe and environmentally friendly.

The full schedule and other types of vehicles can be found on LTA’s website.

2. Cars on private hire schemes

If your car is registered as a private hire vehicle such as a PHV, you will need to follow a different inspection cycle. Most PHVs require inspections every six months due to higher mileage and heavier usage.

For more information, you can find the LTA’s official FAQ
here.

3. Cars with modifications

If your car has approved modifications, you may be required to go for special inspections. This depends on the type of modification. LTA may notify you if your vehicle needs additional checks.

How to know when it is time to inspect your car?

LTA will send you an inspection notice within 3 months before your vehicle’s inspection due date. You can also check your inspection due date through the OneMotoring website. It is important not to ignore these reminders because driving a car that has missed its inspection date is an offence in Singapore.

Failing to comply with an LTA inspection notice (i.e., not sending your vehicle for inspection when due) can result in a fine of up to $1,000, or imprisonment of up to 3 months, or both.

You must complete the inspection before renewing your road tax. If your car fails the inspection, you need to fix the issues before the deadline.

Where to inspect your car in Singapore?

You can send your vehicle for inspection at any LTA-Authorised Inspection Centre (AIC)

The three main providers are:

  • VICOM
  • STA Inspection
  • JIC Inspection

These centres have multiple outlets across Singapore, so you can choose one that is closest or most convenient for you.

A list of LTA authorised IU inspection and service centres can be found here.

Most centres accept walk-ins, but booking an appointment online can help you save time. Fees vary depending on the vehicle type, but private car inspections are usually affordable and quick.

What happens during the inspection?

The process is straightforward. Here is what usually happens:

  1. You drive your car to the inspection centre.
  2. A technician guides you to the inspection lane.
  3. Your car goes through several checks.
  4. You will receive the results on the spot.
Inspection checklist
Structural integrityThe condition of the core structure of the chassis frame
Wheel systemThe operating condition of the tyres, suspension, shock absorber, wheel bearing, and the alignment of wheels
Braking systemThe braking efficiency of both service and parking brakes
Steering systemThe vehicle’s drive shafts and steering system which would affect the vehicle’s directional stability
Condition of the vehicle’s bodyThe vehicle’s body, seat belts, windscreen, door latch and hinges, and other key components
Visual & Indication systemVehicle’s headlamps, reflectors, rear view mirror, direction indicators, windscreen wipers, horn, etc
Propulsion systemThe vehicle’s exhaust system, to ensure that the emissions and noise levels meet the prevailing standards set by the National Environment Agency

If everything is in order, you will get a certificate of compliance and you can proceed to renew your road tax. If the car fails, the results will show what needs to be fixed.

Common reasons for failure include worn tyres, faulty lights, excessive emissions, damaged suspension parts, and worn brakes. Fix these issues as soon as possible and return for reinspection.

How long does an inspection take?

The inspection itself is quick, usually around 15-30 minutes for a private car.

However, you should allow extra time for queueing, especially if you arrive between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. On busy days wait times can run longer, but the process is generally efficient if you come early or outside peak hours.

Tips to pass your LTA car inspection

Here are simple steps you can take before heading to the centre:

  • Check that all your lights are working
  • Make sure your tyres have enough tread
  • Ensure your horn, wipers, and mirrors are in good condition
  • Fix any visible oil leaks
  • Avoid unnecessary modifications that are not approved by LTA

A quick visit to a workshop for a basic check can also help you avoid a repeat inspection.

What happens if you modify your vehicle illegally?

If your car has unauthorised modifications - especially to the engine or exhaust - it could be flagged under the Enhanced Inspection Regime (EIR). Offending vehicles may be fined, suspended from the road, and required to undergo inspections more often: every 6 months for 2 years (on second offence), or every 3 months for frequent offenders.

That’s why it’s always safest to stick to legal, manufacturer-approved modifications.

What if you’re buying a used car?

Car inspection history matters a lot if you’re considering a used car - especially one that’s older than 3 years. Always ask for:

  • Current inspection pass (if applicable)
  • Service records covering brakes, suspension, airbags, tyres, etc.
  • Any history of failures or re-tests

Buying from a trusted platform like Carro can give you extra confidence.
